Ironman Attorney | Foundation 2 – Community

It has been way too long since I posted on the Ironman Attorney blog. I suppose this happens to everyone, but one of the things I enjoy doing is posting on here (both for professional happiness and personal gratification), so I will try not to let it happen too often.

Every Thursday, I play basketball with a group of guys from my neighborhood. Now, the Ironman Attorney grew up playing soccer, and has since gotten into triathlon. I never really played basketball. So, basically, I’m terrible.

But that’s not why I play. You see, after practicing law all day (okay, that’s not all I do), I want to have interaction with other people. Most of us aren’t good, but we have fun. The camaraderie is just as important, if not more important, than playing. In fact, I bet a lot of us wouldn’t even care if we played basketball. But, basketball is the vehicle that gets us together.

I grew up in Maryland, and lived in the same home until I graduated from high school. After going away for college and law school, I returned to my hometown. So my community is very important to me. I’ve seen how it has changed over the last 30 years. Consequently, doing things in and with my community is also important to me.

It doesn’t really matter what it is, I just pick things and do them. Why? Because I know that I will be happy for doing them. Whether it is playing basketball on Thursday nights, or volunteering at the local food bank, or watching the local high school soccer team (which I did last night), it give me a sense of community. And community is one of my four foundations.
